Nevinson and Stanley Spencer – six of the most important and distinctive British artists of the twentieth century – had all been students together at the Slade School of Art in London.
Mark Gertler (9 December – 23 June ), born Marks Gertler, was a British painter of figure subjects, portraits and still-life.. His early life and his relationship with Dora Carrington were the inspiration for Gilbert Cannan's novel Mendel. The characters of Loerke in D. H. Lawrence's Women in Love and Gombauld in Aldous Huxley's Crome Yellow were based on him. This is one of a pair of powerful self-portraits, both executed in , which gained praise from the critic of The Architect when exhibited at Gertler’s first solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery, London, in February , ‘Gertler is a figure artist, and must be judged by his figure work,[ ].I should put first the two self-portraits, [including] one in the studio before the canvas’.

Gertler was influenced by Post-Impressionism, but his style was highly individual, with strong elements of eastern European folk art. Gertler was a conscientious objector. He lived near London’s Hampstead Heath, and may have been inspired by an annual fair.
In Gertler met the author and poet Gilbert Cannan, who later described him as "a small passionate man with green eyes".Cannan subsequently invited Mark to stay with him and his wife Mary at their Mill House in Cholesbury and the two men became good friends.

Gertler used the three-poster format to illustrate three seasons: spring, summer and autumn. Each painting depicts a lavish display of the fruit available in Britain during each season. Exh: Twentieth Century Art, Whitechapel Art Gallery, May–June (Merry-Go-Round is a large oil on canvas painting made by Mark Gertler inwhen he was 24 years old. It is perhaps his most famous work, and depicts men and women (many in uniform) on a merry-go-round ride. The painting (and another painting entitled Swing Boats, now lost) may have been inspired by a ride at the annual fair on Hampstead Heath.
